Why Do We Need Antioxidants?
Antioxidant is the common term used to refer to substances that act as electron donors inside the body. Let me explain why that matters to you and me (1, 2):
Our bodies are made up of around a trillion cells, which undergo their own life-span of birth, growth, and death. During their lifetime, these cells are subject to all sorts of threats, from infection to poor nutrition, but one of the biggest is free radicals.
These chemicals make otherwise healthy cells unstable, leading to all sorts of health issues from cancer to heart disease. That instability comes from them “stealing” electrons, a process called oxidation, and that’s where antioxidants come in.

Free radicals that cause oxidation come naturally as a byproduct of metabolism, and the body typically can handle those without issue. But the problem is all of the ones we ingest through poor diet, tobacco smoke, UV radiation from sun exposure, and air pollution, just to name a few. The body can’t typically keep up with this level of free radicals so we must add antioxidants to our systems in order to help.
Antioxidants protect cells against damage by donating electrons to free radicals, rendering them harmless. Most occur naturally in the foods we eat. There are thousands of compounds, like vitamins C and E, that are key to keeping our bodies healthy by preventing oxidation in our systems.
What’s In This Antioxidant Fruit Juice?
Berries of all kinds are chocked full of immune-loving antioxidants that work to scrub free radicals from our bodies. Blackberries are a great source of three key antioxidants: vitamin C, manganese, and vitamin K (3).
Strawberries are also packed with vitamin C, with 160% RDA in a mere eight medium-sized fruits (4). Another important antioxidant source in strawberries is anthocyanins (5), which give this fruit its bright red color.

Cantaloupe contains over 100% of the RDA of Vitamin C in a single cup (6). This powerful antioxidant is also known to help lower the risk of breast, colon, and lung cancers. It also works to improve symptoms of the common cold and eye disease. They also have the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin.
Limes also bring vitamin C to this antioxidant juice recipe, as well as other antioxidants such as quercetin and kaempferol. Studies have shown them to be particularly helpful in halting the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (7).
Turmeric contains the powerful antioxidant curcumin, which is known to help manage oxidation and inflammation in the body (8).

I’m Berry Healthy
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 36 fl oz 1x
Description
You can’t go wrong with adding berries to your juice recipe! They’re incredibly beneficial for immune system support and overall health.
Ingredients
- 1 Cantaloupe
- 6 oz Blackberries
- 12 oz Strawberries
- 3” Thumb of Turmeric
- 1 Lime
Instructions
- Peel and deseed (optional) the melon.
- Rinse the blackberries and strawberries.
- Scrub the turmeric root.
- Peel (optional) the lime.
- Run all ingredients through your juicer and enjoy!!!
Notes
When it comes to melons, I like to juice them with the seeds intact. This extracts a little of the oils in those seeds, adding to the overall nutritional content and giving the finished juice a bit of extra smoothness, which I enjoy.
I also will leave the peel on citrus when the recipe calls for only one or two pieces. Again, the nutrition found in the peel is an added benefit, but too much can make the juice bitter. Experiment to see how much, if any, peel you like to leave on. Enjoy and Stay Juicy!
