What is Oxidative Stress?
Oxidative stress is when the body is host to more unstable molecules, called free radicals, than it can get rid of (1). When this happens it causes cellular and tissue damage. Over time, that damage can result in a whole host of health conditions:
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- High Cholesterol
- Heart Failure
- Stroke
- Alzheimer’s Disease
Simply put, antioxidants are the compounds that remove free radicals, protecting our system from the havoc they cause. Specifically, they donate an electron missing in free radicals thus neutralizing their ability to damage otherwise healthy cells.

Plants (fruits, roots, leafy greens, etc) are known to contain significant amounts of different antioxidants. Juicing them concentrates those compounds, delivering them to you in a deliciously concentrated package.
Why are Antioxidants Good for Skin?
The aging process is significantly influenced by oxidative stress in the skin (2). The epidermis (outer skin layer), in particular, is subject to such stressors both from our external and internal environment – sun exposure, smoking (and second-hand smoke), poor diet, and a host of others all bring their destructive oxidative effects to show literally on our faces.
Antioxidants work to combat oxidative effects in the skin by:
- Reducing Inflammation
- Protect Against UV Damage
- Mollify the Signs of Extrinsic Aging (those from external sources like smoking, pollution, etc)
Watermelon Benefits for Skin
Watermelon is rich in a multitude of antioxidants, like vitamins A and C, lycopene, carotenoids, and cucurbitacin (3). These may help support skin health thanks to their ability to remove skin-cell-damaging free radicals.

Vitamin C helps the body make collagen, the protein responsible for keeping skin smooth and pliable, while vitamin A aids in creating and repairing skin cells. Lycopene and vitamin C are also known to reduce inflammation and oxidative damage.
Turmeric and Ginger for Skin
Turmeric’s main active ingredient is curcumin which has significant anti-inflammatory effects and potent antioxidant properties (4). Both play a significant role in skin support which can result in the reduction of the visible aging process, helping give you that glow you’re looking for.

Ginger, too, steps up to the plate swinging with its own team of antioxidants, particularly gingerol (5), which scrub free radicals that contribute to the appearance of fine lines, spotty skin (hyperpigmentation), and wrinkles.

Limes also contain vitamin C and other flavonoids that strengthen collagen. These four simple ingredients combine to make one powerful skin-loving juice!

Description
Juicing is a great way to support skin health, and not just for hydration! In this recipe, I feature the beloved watermelon, adding in some other antioxidant powerhouses to make you the best juice for glowing skin. I can’t get enough of this when it’s watermelon season because it tastes so good and is wonderful for my skin!
Ingredients
- 12 c Watermelon
- 3” Thumb of Turmeric
- 3” Thumb of Ginger
- 2 Limes
Instructions
- Chop up the watermelon (leaving the rind on is optional).
- Scrub the turmeric and ginger.
- Peel the lime (optional).
- Run the ingredients through your juicer and enjoy!!!
Notes
I typically use seeded watermelon whenever I can find it. It’s usually sweeter and juicing the seeds isn’t a problem. Regarding leaving the rind on or not when juicing is a personal preference. Sometimes I do and others I don’t. The benefit of juicing the rind is getting the additional nutrients found there. The downside is that doing so will dilute the overall sweetness level of the juice.
For both roots (like turmeric and ginger) as well as citrus (in small quantities), I juice them with the skin on. Again, the reason is to get the added benefits found there. I wouldn’t recommend this with citrus juice if you’re using more than two small pieces of fruit, as the bitterness from the skin oils can significantly impact the flavor.
