Signs of Liver Issues

The liver is an organ that plays a pivotal role in literally hundreds of functions, with the most important being the filtration of toxins from the blood (1). By its very nature as a filter, the liver is susceptible to damage from those toxins it removes. Damage, both acute and chronic, can and does occur.

Signs of liver issues vary depending on the cause and stage of disease (2):

First Signs and Symptoms

  • Upper Abdominal Pain
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

Later Stage Signs and Symptoms

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
  • Dark-Colored Urine
  • Light-Colored Stool
  • Unexplained Weight and Muscle Loss
  • Musty-Smelling Breath
  • Mild Brain Impairment
  • Trouble Digesting, Particularly Fats
  • Itchy Skin with No Visible Rash

Advanced Stage Signs and Symptoms

  • Spoon Nails
  • Nail Clubbing
  • Broken Blood Vessels that Resemble a Spider (Spider Angioma)
  • Easy Bleeding or Bruising
  • Red Palms
  • Small Fat Deposits on the Skin or Eyelids
  • Swollen Abdomen and/or Ankles, Feed, Hands, and Face

Liver disease affects more than 100 million in the United States. The vast majority of those affected go undiagnosed, with only 4.5 million of those 100 million being formally diagnosed (2). If left untreated, liver disease can lead to liver cancer and liver failure, ranking as the 9th highest cause of death (3).

Why Juice for Liver Health?

When looking at juice’s effects on the most common form of liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, it has been shown to reduce the markers of this condition (4). The ingredients in this juice may help support the body’s natural ability to detoxify and help with healthy liver function.

The signs of liver issues are many, and depend upon what stage of disease is involved.

Dandelion is used as a liver tonic in traditional medicine. These greens contain polysaccharides which are known to reduce stress on the liver, support bile production, and help filter out harmful chemicals (5).

Kale contains the phytochemical isothiocyanate, which helps regulate the detoxification process in our cells (6). Sulfur found in kale also helps to support detoxification and is found to be particularly effective against liver fibrosis (7).

Celery has been found to support liver health through its powerful antioxidant activities (8). Cucumber is a great source of hydration which helps keep the liver happy.

The enzyme bromelin, found in abundance in fresh pineapple, is found to protect against non-alcoholic liver disease (9). It also aids digestion, helping keep the liver free from toxins produced by ineffective digestion (10)

Of all the juicers that I use and recommend, the PURE has the highest juice yield (20-50% more), the best enzyme and nutrient extraction, and the smoothest pulp-free juice. What makes this juicer so great? The magic is found in its unique 2-stage cold press process; at the heart is its 2.5-ton hydraulic press.

The increased yield alone ensures that the PURE pays for itself in produce cost savings over time. Made of high-grade stainless steel, it’s at the top end of construction durability and is backed by a 12-year warranty. PURE really does take juicing to the next level!

Description

Help boost your body’s natural ability to detoxify itself with this incredible green juice for liver detox!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 Dandelion Leaves (large)
  • 5 Celery Stalks
  • 1 Uber Ripe Pineapple
  • 3 Kale Leaves (large)
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1 Lemon

Instructions

  1. Wash and pat dry the dandelion and kale leaves.
  2. Clean the celery thoroughly.
  3. Decrown and peel the pineapple.
  4. Wash and peel (only if waxed) the cucumbers.
  5. Peel (optional) the lemon.
  6. Run all ingredients through your juicer and enjoy!

Notes

I used cultivated dandelion leaves from the store, whose leaves are larger than those of their wild cousin. Feel free to use wild-harvested leaves, but be sure to source them from non-chemically treated lawns.

When it comes to peeling your produce before juicing, I do my best to leave it on whenever possible. There are additional nutrients to be found there. Exceptions for me are produce that has been highly waxed, like cucumbers, or those with bitter/astringent peels. Citrus would be an example. However, I typically leave it on if it’s only one or two pieces in a batch. Experiment and see what you like best.
