What is Poor Circulation?

Powered by the heart, the circulatory system is a series of tubes (ranging from the largest arteries to the smallest capillaries) that is the delivery system for blood – the substrate that carries nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, removes toxins and waste products, and regulates internal temperature (1, 2).

What causes poor circulation? When the free flow of blood through the circulatory system is impeded by physical obstructions, like blood clots, narrow vessels, and plaque.

Poor circulation is when this key biological system suffers from physical issues that impede normal blood flow. Things like blood clots, arterial plaque, and even the narrowing of blood vessels can all be the cause. The primary result is poor cell oxygenation. Like us, our cells don’t do well when their oxygen is restricted.

What Causes Poor Circulation?

Underlying health conditions that reduce blood flow can cause poor circulation. Here is a list of the primary culprits (1, 3):

  • Smoking – increases the risk of atherosclerosis (arterial plaque) and damages blood vessels.
  • Atherosclerosis & Peripheral Artery Disease – deposits of fat and cholesterol inside the arteries limit blood flow.
  • Diabetes – damages nerves and blood vessels, negatively affecting circulation, particularly in the upper and lower extremities.
  • Varicose Veins – misshapen veins with extra pressure, most often in the legs, reduce blood flow efficiency and can lead to clots.
  • Blood Clots & Deep Vein Thrombosis – blocking blood flow, partially or completely.
  • Obesity – increases the risk of circulation-decreasing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.
  • High Blood Pressure – weakens blood vessels, making it more difficult for them to move blood.
  • Raynaud’s Disease – narrowed arteries in the hands and toes reduce circulation.

Symptoms of Circulatory Issues

Knowing you have poor circulation is certainly something for your doctor to diagnose, but there are symptoms of circulatory issues that may spur you to see the them sooner rather than later.

What causes poor circulation are a set of underlying conditions that negatively affect blood flow in the body. Symptoms of circulatory issues range from cold hands to chest pain.

Symptoms can include (1, 4):

  • Swelling – especially the feet and ankles, but anywhere in the body can be a sign.
  • Cold and/or Numb Fingers and Toes
  • Bulging Veins
  • Digestive Issues – constipation, belly ache, diarrhea, bloody stool, cramping.
  • Chest Pain
  • Sores or Wounds that Won’t Heal
  • Tingling Sensation on the Skin – often described as “pins and needles”.
  • Weak or Painful Muscles – particularly when walking
  • Blue or Pale Skin – lips, ears, nose, hands, feet, and nipples.
  • Confusion or Memory Loss

Why Juice for Circulation?

Potassium contained in grapes can help regulate blood pressure (5). This is accomplished through potassium’s ability to dilate blood vessels, plus the secondary effect of allowing the body to excrete excess sodium (6).

Peaches may lower high blood pressure and cholesterol. Studies have found that the antioxidants, flavonoids, and polyphenols found in peaches bind bile acids. By binding these acids, the cholesterol attached to them is also bound and then excreted through feces, thereby lowering cholesterol levels in the bloodstream (7).

The anthocyanins in strawberries may improve heart health by improving blood pressure and HDL (good) cholesterol levels, as well as blood platelet function (8).

  • 4 c Grapes
  • 4 Peaches
  • 16 oz Strawberries


  1. Rinse and destem the grapes.
  2. Rinse and pit the peaches.
  3. Rinse and decrown (optional) the strawberries.
  4. Run all ingredients through your juicer and enjoy!


Feel free to use any grapes for this recipe. If you want to boost the antioxidant content, go with dark-pigmented varieties.
