Keeping your lymphatic system flowing is key to a healthy immune system by maintaining tissue fluid balance and protecting us from infection. Some call it the body’s sewer system. Given that comparison, you can imagine what happens when it doesn’t drain properly…yuck. Juicing for lymphatic system drainage is one way to help keep things flowing, allowing your body to be happy and healthy.

What Are the Signs of Lymphatic Blockage?
The lymphatic system is the highway, or drainage pipes, that transports both excess metabolic fluid away from tissues and delivers immune-active cells to areas that are damaged or diseased. When you have lymphatic blockage it can cause lymphedema (swelling in your extremities) due to the inability of metabolic fluids to properly regulate.

Other symptoms of a backed-up lymphatic system include (1):
- Swelling and heaviness in the arms and legs
- Trouble moving
- Developing tight or thickened skin
- Continual skin infections
- Skin color changes
- Appearance of folds or wart-like growths on the skin
- Skin leaking fluid
- If relegated to the head and neck, heaviness and swelling of the mouth, throat, and face coupled with swallowing and speech issues.
How Grapes Support Lymphatic System Naturally
Studies suggest that the consumption of grape juice supports the circulation of T cells in the lymphatic system. These vital cells are responsible for directing the elimination of infected cells, activating additional immune cells, and regulating the immune system (2).

Grape juice is also shown to significantly decrease lymphocyte DNA damage, thereby bolstering the antioxidant defense system of the lymphatic system (3).
Can Dehydration Cause Swollen Lymph Nodes?
According to the National Institute of Health, dehydration has a definite link to changes in our lymph nodes (4). It’s no wonder, seeing that lymphatic fluid is 96% water. Therefore, hydration is another key component to promoting lymphatic system drainage; there’s nothing as good for that as fresh coconut water.

Its concentration of electrolytes, like potassium and magnesium, is thought to provide heightened hydration levels. Adding the solvent power of fresh lemon juice rounds out this lymphatic draining juice.

- 6 c Black Grapes
- 1 Lemon

Notes
Be sure to use young coconuts (often called Thai coconuts) for this recipe as it’s the coconut water you want. Safely opening these can be a tricky business without the right tool. I use the FANATU Coconut Opener to pop the top for easy access to the tasty coconut water inside.Â
Also, don’t leave the coconut meat behind! While I don’t use it in this recipe, you’ll want to scrape it out with either a spoon or get yourself a Coco Buddy. I swear by the Coco Buddy, by the way. It looks like a simple piece of plastic, but it pops out that young coconut meat like a dream!
