The Details: Antioxidants Cool Inflammation
The mighty pineapple is an antioxidant powerhouse, including vitamin C, manganese, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. Antioxidants work to prevent inflammation and protect our tissues by counteracting the oxidative stresses in the body that contribute to disease. Even better, many of these antioxidant compounds in pineapple are considered “bound”, meaning they generate longer-lasting effects in our bodies.
Ginger and turmeric contain the phytochemicals gingerol and curcumin, respectively, which are both powerful antioxidants. Blood oranges contain the cancer-fighting antioxidant chrysanthemin (the compound responsible for this particular orange’s intense color. Caffeic, ferulic, and coumaric acids are also present, all of which have been shown to have anti-cancer effects in lab testing.
