What is the Main Cause of Inflammation in the Body?

Everybody’s heard of it, but what is the main cause of inflammation in the body? The answer isn’t a simple one, so let’s tease it out.

There are two types of inflammation: Acute and Chronic (1)

Acute inflammation is a direct result of an injury or infection. Its purpose is to promote healing. Bump your head or scrape your knee, and the surrounding tissue reacts by swelling up from the injury.

Say that scrape gets infected. The affected area will continue to be swollen and then might also get hot and red because of the reaction to that infection. Inflammation cause and effect is pretty cut (no pun intended) and dry.

What is the main cause of inflammation in the body? That depends on the type: Acute is caused by injury or infection, while chronic is associated with numerous chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity.

Chronic inflammation is a lot more complicated. This form can come on for no known medical reason and causes harm, rather than healing, to the body. It’s tied to a whole host of chronic conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Stress, both Physical and Mental
  • Autoimmune Conditions
  • Cardiovascular Disease

Chronic inflammation can also be brought on by exposure to certain environmental conditions, such as air pollution and radiation (2).

What Are the 5 Classic Signs of Inflammation?

The classic signs of inflammation are swelling, redness, heat, pain, and function loss (3). These are mostly associated with acute inflammation, although some forms of chronic inflammation experience them as well.

Modern medicine acknowledges that chronic inflammation is a lot more complex and can come with an entire host of other signs…and sometimes none at all.

What are the 5 classic signs of inflammation? Swelling, resness, heat, pain, and function loss. This is primarily for acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation has a whole host of possible signs from depression to joint pain.

Some signs of chronic inflammation are (4):

  • Skin Rash
  • Depression, Anxiety, and other Mood Disorders
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Weight Gain or Loss
  • Chest Pain
  • Gastrointestinal Issues (constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux)
  • Joint Pain and/or Stiffness
  • Repeated Infections
  • Mouth Sores

Why Is Pineapple Good for Inflammation?

The mighty pineapple is an antioxidant powerhouse, including vitamin C, manganese, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds (5). Antioxidants work to prevent inflammation and protect our tissues by counteracting the oxidative stresses (free radicals) in the body that contribute to disease (6).

Particularly key in pineapple is bromelain, a proteolytic (protein digesting) enzyme that possesses a high degree of anti-inflammatory activity (7).

Ginger and turmeric contain the phytochemicals gingerol and curcumin, respectively, which are both powerful antioxidants (8). When paired together, the synergistic effect on inflammation of these two incredible roots is even greater (9)!

In addition to a good amount of vitamin C, blood oranges contain the cancer-fighting antioxidant chrysanthemin (the compound responsible for this particular orange’s intense color. Caffeic, ferulic, and coumaric acids are also present, all of which have been shown to have anti-cancer effects in lab testing (10).

Description

Put pineapple to work, cooling off your body’s inflammation with this simple yet powerful recipe!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Uber Ripe Pineapple
  • 4 Blood Oranges
  • 3” Thumb of Ginger
  • 3” Thumb of Turmeric

Instructions

  1. Decrown and peel the pineapple.
  2. Peel the oranges.
  3. Scrub the turmeric and ginger.
  4. Run all ingredients through your juicer and enjoy!!!

Notes

Any orange will work in this recipe, so experiment to see which ones taste best to you. I love using blood oranges when they’re in season – they add a delightful raspberry note and are usually nice and sweet. You won’t get the chrysanthemin in regular oranges, but the boost of vitamin C will still be there to help counter inflammation.

I don’t peel my ginger or turmeric before juicing. There are no off-flavors from the peel so no need to remove it. Just be sure to scrub any stuck on soil.
