During an injury or infection, inflammation is an important part of the body’s immune response system. But when it becomes chronic, it can lead to many health issues like cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and type-2 diabetes. We can help counter those effects through diet and lifestyle choices, and a great way to begin is with this super anti-inflammatory juice!

What is the Main Cause of Inflammation in the Body?
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to an irritant, like a bacteria, virus, foreign object, toxin, or a wound (1). It’s a sign that our immune system has detected an “intruder” and is attempting to get rid of it. But what is the main cause of inflammation in the body? There are actually two main causes: acute and chronic.

Acute Inflammation
Responses like swelling and pain, as well as bruising, puss, and redness, are all outward signs of acute inflammation and are tied to sudden (acute) damage to the body. When such damage occurs, specific cells called inflammatory cells are sent to the injured area to begin the healing process (2).
Chronic Inflammation
When the body’s natural inflammatory response, which is designed to be a short-term activity focused on healing an acute issue, doesn’t shut off this is called chronic inflammation. This overactivity of the immune system is typically tied to a host of diseases with a variety of symptoms that differ from those associated with acute inflammation. These include chest and abdominal pain, mouth sores and skin rash, joint pain or stiffness, fever, and fatigue.

Some of the diseases associated with chronic inflammation are:
- Heart Disease
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Lupus
- HIV
- Psoriasis
- Tuberculosis
How to Reduce Inflammation Naturally
The top answer for how to reduce inflammation naturally is diet. What we put into our bodies has a huge effect on inflammation and is the best way to reduce it for good (3).
Dietary items that cause inflammation:
- Fried Foods
- Red Meat
- Processed Meat
- Refined Carbohydrates
- Trans Fats
Dietary items that help reduce inflammation:
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Vitamin C
- Polyphenols
- Pre and Probiotic Foods
What to Juice for Inflammation?
With diet playing such a key role in fighting inflammation, particularly chronic inflammation, juicing is an excellent delivery system. Juicing fruits and vegetables that contain anti-inflammatory components like polyphenols and vitamin C gives you a concentrated dose in a small, easily consumed package. So, what to juice for inflammation? This juice recipe has some anti-inflammatory powerhouses ready to rumble!

The primary anti-inflammatory component in pineapple is the enzyme bromelain. It is believed to be responsible for triggering our bodies to reduce swelling and fight pain. It is used in treating injuries and is thought to counter symptoms for a range of diseases from osteoarthritis and cancer to inflammatory bowel disease (4).
Vitamin C, found in oranges, is shown to counter chronic inflammation (5). Elevated inflammation markers, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP), are associated with health conditions like certain cancers and heart disease (6). Drinking fresh OJ has been found to reduce these markers, which could possibly help prevent inflammatory-related disease (7).

Punicalagin, a type of phenolic compound called an ellagitannin, found in pomegranates may also help reduce certain inflammatory markers when ingesting fresh pomegranate juice (8).

Green leafy vegetables like spinach are known powerhouses against inflammation thanks to their elevated levels of vitamin K (9). Celery, too, is packed with anti-inflammatory compounds that may help counter chronic inflammation and help prevent disease (10).

Notes
Green Juice Cubes
Making ice cubes from fresh juice is a good way to keep things cool and add some extra zing! In this recipe, I use my favorite green juice cube recipe. But you can do it with nearly anything!
Try using lemon or lime juice cubes with low-acidity mono-juices (like grape or watermelon) to give it some zing. Another idea is to make berry juice cubes and add them to orange or pineapple-based recipes, giving them a mocktail feel. The sky’s the limit, so experiment to find your favorites!
If you’re looking for the small spherical ice cube tray I use, here it is!
Fresh Pomegranate Juice
Pomegranates can be a bit tricky to juice. They store their magical juice in tiny bubbles called arils, surrounded by a bitter peel (much like citrus).
For me, the quickest way to juice pomegranates is to peel them. This removes most of the bitter peel and leaves me with a great-tasting juice.
The Pelamatic Orange Peeler Pro is my go-to peeler for everything from pomegranates to citrus. It saves me TONS of time and is simple to use. I absolutely love it!
