I’m a big fan of fresh coconut water. It’s a fantastic way to rehydrate after a workout, a long walk in the sun, or even after an illness. But there’s so much more you can do than simply drink it plain. I get asked a lot, “What can I mix with coconut water?“. My answer? All sorts of things! But I’m going to share one of my absolute favorites with you in this article. Check it out and give it a try for yourself!

What Are the Benefits of Blue Spirulina?
Spirulina, known as Blue-Green Algae, is one of the Earth’s oldest life forms. Which is cool and all, but why am I using it in this recipe? Besides giving coconut milk a super blue hue, it adds a wealth of health benefits (1).
Considered a superfood, a tablespoon of spirulina provides 4 g of protein and a significant amount of multiple key micronutrients: Copper, Riboflavin, Thiamin, Iron, Niacin, Magnesium, Potassium, and Manganese.

It acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, is known to help lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol, may help fight cancer (oral in particular), can reduce blood pressure, combat anemia, improve muscle performance, and even reduce blood sugar levels. Because it’s so powerful it has some contraindications, as do many things, so be sure to check those out before you use it.
You can score spirulina in its original green form or in its extracted form, a process that concentrates the amount of phycocyanin resulting in the intense blue color. I prefer using the blue spirulina for its color and neutral flavor, but feel free to experiment for yourself!
Tips on How to Crack a Coconut
There’s more than one way to crack a coconut and I’ve tried them all. For me, the best method is to hit the median line (centerline) of the coconut with a rubber mallet or small hammer. To save the delicious coconut water, I typically do this while holding the coconut over a sieve placed over a bowl or liquid measuring pitcher.

Now, I admit that I have large hands that make this technique pretty easy for me. My wife, on the other hand, prefers to use a sanitized Phillips screwdriver and hammer to knock out two of the three “eyes” on the end so she can pour out the coconut water first. Then she does the mallet method using a cutting board instead of holding it in her hand. Either way you do it, just take care not to get your fingers between mallet and coconut!

The Beauty of Blue
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 32 oz 1x
Description
I’m a big fan of fresh coconut water, and love to mix different things with it to create delicious combinations! Try this super blue recipe and taste how good it can be!
Ingredients
- 2 Mature Coconuts – Water & Flesh
- 2 c Water
- 2–4 Tbsp Pure Bulk Organics Blue Spirulina Powder
Instructions
- Crack open the coconuts, being sure to capture the water.
- Pour the captured coconut water through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove any shell fragments.
- Scrape out the coconut meat, removing any attached shell.
- Blend the coconut meat, coconut water, regular water, and blue spirulina in a blender until smooth.
- Run everything through your juicer and enjoy!
Notes
Using mature instead of young coconuts gives you a thicker, more milk-like consistency which I really love paired with the blue spirulina. It’s important to run the mix through the juicer to get out any micro shell fragments and squeeze any remaining chunks of coconut meat for the smoothest results. Enjoy
Also, if you’re using the PURE Juicer, be sure to use one of their nut bags to press the mixture. It will make the process go so smoothly!
